Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a 10-digit alphanumeric number issued by the Income Tax Department assigned to taxpayers in India. All tax-related information of a person is recorded against a single PAN number, which serves as the primary key for information storage. No two persons or tax-paying businesses can have the same PAN. In cases where the PAN is lost or needs reissue, the Income Tax Department (ITD) has appointed only two entities, namely UTI Infrastructure Technology And Services Limited (UTIITSL) and Protean eGov Technologies Limited (Protean), to receive and process PAN applications and any PAN related services.

  • Please apply for a duplicate PAN only if it is lost. Don’t apply for a fresh PAN, as holding multiple PANs is illegal in India.
  • Check whether you need an e-PAN or a Physical PAN card. The e-PAN is legally valid and delivered faster, often within a few days of applying. Physical PAN cards may take longer to arrive by post.
